§   About new words, sentences and characters

When we read the story to children, we should neither pursue efficiency nor “accelerate” teaching progress. Together with children, we may slow down and try to appreciate the story world. In a timely manner, we could teach some of the words and expressions they are interested in. 

§   About listening, speaking, reading and writing.

At the beginning of storytelling, we could use some help of English to interpret. After the first time, we might gradually reduce the use of English interpretation, so that children could really understand the story in Chinese and improve their listening skills.

In order to enhance their oral communication skills, we might raise some questions for children during the storytelling. According to the children’s different ability, besides detailed questions those close to the pictures, we might also provide some relatively abstract questions, even lead children to retell the whole story.

Though character writing is not compulsory, understanding and reading characters is essential. Throughout the picture book and workbook, pinyin is printed alongside helping children to read aloud at the beginning. As more familiar with the story, children are encouraged to read Chinese characters without pinyin.

§   About skills and abilities

Each simple little story has a theme, providing opportunities for the children to develop their observing, thinking and operating abilities during Chinese learning. Children could take a close look to those precious virtues such as friendship, confidence, independence and etc. Therefore, we shall not overlook guidance in this perspective, ensuring an integrated development .

§   About multimedia learning material

 

The CD attached contains audio (the story text, audio exercises), teaching references (the text of audio exercises, speaking exercise, activities materials, English translation of the story), and game props (word cards, masks). Those resources could be very helpful in the classroom.
